About Me

About Me
My name is Elizabeth Hepler and I’ve been a practicing Speech-Language Pathologist since 2005.  I am the mother of four great kids: Jacob (12), Ava (9), Lucas (7), and Emma (4). Three of my children have a diagnosis of ADHD and Lucas also has a diagnosis of autism.
I have learned more from being a Mom of a child with autism than I have in any other experience. I hope sharing my experiences from both sides of the table (both as an SLP and as a mom with a child with a disability) will be helpful for all who read and watch.
As a Mom of a child with autism, I struggled to find resources to help him...and me.  I often searched the internet, looked to other parents and therapists for help, and still felt like I often couldn't find what we needed.
One of my favorite parts of being a mom and an SLP is seeing a child make progress...big or small.  I am proud to celebrate every single victory each of my children and students make.  My ultimate goal for each of my children (and students) is for them to meet their potential, no matter what that potential may be.
The reason I named this blog “Ausome SLP” is because we have decided that autism is awesome at our house.  It's not quite what we expected, but you know what?  It's still a lot of fun!  Being a parent of a child with autism makes me an Ausome Mom...and working with children with autism makes me an Ausome SLP.  The spelling is no error...it's a play on the delightful characteristics that make autism so awesome...AUSOME!
My goal is to share some tips and techniques I have learned over the years in working with my students and my own kids.  I will share videos and social stories to help you and your children learn about pragmatics.  I will do my best to put as much information to help you and your child in one place so that you can find it...here on this website.  I recognize and empathize with the difficulty in raising any child, working with any child, and teaching any child...most especially children with special needs.
My Education and Experience
I completed both my Bachelor’s and my Master’s degrees at Appalachian State University.  I have worked mostly in private practice in North Carolina since that time. I serve children of all ages, but most are 3-5 year olds.
I have special interest in developmental delays, autism, ADHD, sensory processing, and pragmatic language.
My hope is that you will find some helpful information on this site and that you might share this blog with other parents, therapists, and professionals that would find this information helpful as well.

Privacy
Please be mindful that I do use my own children in photos and videos as they have a unique perspective and have agreed to take part in whatever we are sharing.  For more information on the privacy policy of this website, you can visit the Privacy Policy page found at the bottom of the home page.
Thank you,
Elizabeth Hepler, MA/CCC-SLP
